Waiting bad. Waiting good.

Waiting on the snow.

We are expecting some this weekend. The Indian Summer must be over. Hopefully we won't get as much as in the picture. That was from last year - our old horseshoe watching bench. Covered.

Waiting on a friend, Stones:

Charlie's so good at the end.

I will dare.

This was the song the Replacments were playing when they broke up during a radio simulcast at Chicago's Taste of Chicago.

Wiki tells the story so much better...

Wiki: Replacements

They are:

The Replacements (also known as The 'Mats or The Mats, from the insult of a detractor who joked the band's name was 'The Placemats', which the band then adopted) were a seminal alternative rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They began as a punk rock outfit, along with other hometown heroes Hüsker Dü, but they gradually shifted to a more mainstream, blues-influenced rock style. Loud and exuberant, the band featured guitarist and vocalist Paul Westerberg, guitarist Bob Stinson, bassist Tommy Stinson, and drummer Chris Mars. Bassist Tommy Stinson was just 12 years old when the group first formed.

Breakup (1991-Present)

On July 4th, 1991, the band officially broke up following a frantic
Taste of Chicago performance in Grant Park, referred to by fans as "It Ain't Over 'Til the Fat Roadie Plays" because each member disappeared during the set, their respective roadies taking their places. This show was broadcast by Chicago radio station WXRT. There are several bootlegs floating around the internet.

On Bolt: Replacements.

I Will Dare
The Replacements

How young are you?
How old am I?
Let’s count the rings around my eyes.
How smart are you?
How dumb am I?
Don’t count any of my advice.
Meet me anyplace or anywhere or anytime,
Now I don’t care, meet me tonight;
If you will dare, I might dare.
Call me on Thursday, if you will.
Or call me on Wednesday, better still.
Ain’t lost yet, so I gotta be a winner,
Fingernails and a cigarettes a lousy dinner.
Young, are you?
Meet me anyplace or anywhere or anytime.
Now, I don’t care, meet me tonight;
If you will dare, I will dare.
Meet me anyplace or anywhere or anytime.
Now, I don’t care, meet me tonight;
If you will dare, I will dare.
How young are you?
How old am I?
Let’s count the rings around my eyes.
How smart are you?
How smart are you?
How dumb am I?
Dumb am I….
Meet me anyplace or anywhere or anytime.
Now, I don’t care, meet me tonight;
If you will dare, I will dare.
Meet me anyplace or anywhere or anytime.
Now, I don’t care, meet me tonight;
If you will dare, I will dare.

The Replacements: Achin to Be.

Well, she's kind of like an artist
Sittin' on the floor
Never finishes what she abandons
Never shows a soul

And she's kind of like a movie
Everyone rushes to see
And no one understands it
Sittin' in their seats

She opens her mouth to speak and
What comes out's a mystery
Thought about, not understood
She's achin' to be

Well, she dances alone in nightclubs
Every other day of the week
People look right through her
Baby doll, check your cheek

And she's kind of like a poet
Who finds it hard to speak
Poems come so slowly
Like the colors dyed in sheets

She opens her mouth to speak and
What comes out's a mystery
Thought about, not understood
She's achin' to be

I've been achin' for a while now, friend
I've been achin' hard for years

Yeah, she's kind of like an artist
Who uses paints no more
You never show me what you're doing
Never show a soul

Well, I saw one of your pictures
There was nothin' that I could see
If no one's on your canvas
Well, I'm achin' to be

She closes her mouth to speak and
Closes her eyes to see
Thought about and only loved
She's achin' to be
Just like me

We used to be friends.

My new favorite show. Veronica Mars. Opening music by the Dandy Warhols. (note the reference to the monkey house at the beginning). Love those guys.

VM was on a anntena station that wasn't picked up by my cable company. This is the first season for me. It's just dripping with pop culture references and I feel its better than my old favorite, the Gilmore Girls. Plus, she's blonde and the smartest one on the show. No stereotypes. It gets great reviews (amongst reviewers). Oh well, I watch what I like.

On the musical side, I like Dandy Warhol's influences and their sound.(thanks wiki):

The Portland, Oregon Warhols are strongly influenced by The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones [citation needed] as well as including implicit musical references to Jethro Tull and My Bloody Valentine in some songs. Frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor describes the band beginning as a group of friends who "needed music to drink to." The band performed live shows in bars throughout Portland and released their first album, Dandy's Rule OK? in 1995.

Soul meets body.

My favorite song from the last year or so. I don't remember if I got the CD in 2005 or 2006. Named: Plans.

There are alot of stories about how they got their name. The one I heard was that Cutie was a little poodlelike dog taking his last fateful trip to the vet in a NYC cab.

Not even close but it makes a good story.

From Wiki:

Death Cab for Cutie is an American band formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band takes its name from a satirical song, of the same name, performed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band on their 1967 album Gorilla and in the Beatles experimental movie, Magical Mystery Tour.

We saw them at Lollapalooza this last summer.

"Soul Meets Body"

I want to live where soul meets body

And let the sun wrap its arms around me

And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel, feel what its like to be new

Cause in my head there’s a greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations

So they may have a chance of finding a place

where they’re far more suited than here

I cannot guess what we'll discover

We turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels

But I know our filthy hands can wash one another’s

And not one speck will remain

I do believe it’s true

That there are roads left in both of our shoes

If the silence takes you

Then I hope it takes me too

So brown eyes I hold you near

Cause you’re the only song I want to hear

A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body

Where soul meets body

I do believe it’s true

That there are roads left in both of our shoes

If the silence takes you

Then I hope it takes me too

So brown eyes I hold you near

Cause you’re the only song I want to hear

A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

Not a sunset. Thank(sgiving) heavens.

Something different for a change. Aimers, Clinty, and my black and white pictured niece; Leah the cheerleader. None wanting their pictures taken on Thanksgiving day but they'll appreciate them later.

Sunday at the rest stop.

We have a rest stop about 2 miles out of town. I saw the sun setting and was almost too late to catch a picture. This was the best I could do. Hold the sun right there, make it 70 degrees, and give me a hamburger and potato salad.

Stereo.

Sweet (stereo) sounds for a Monday. Couldn't decide which one I liked better. One is sentimental, melancholy sounding and the other is definitely not. Depends on your mood I guess.

Stereophonics

... from Wales

.. began ... as a teenage cover band known as 'Tragic Love Company', a name inspired by their favourite bands Tragically Hip, Mother Love Bone and Bad Company.

They later changed their name to "Stereophonics", named after ... grandmother's gramophone.

Ship of fools.

I think it's still out there.

Saw him at Chicago last summer during the Taste (of Chicago). Karl has his fans. He's basically a one man band.

Alt Canadian Country.

Kathleen Edwards. Back to Me.

Wikipedia classifies hers as Alt. Country. I only am familiar with this song. Wherever she fits in, I like her sound.

Artist/Band: Edwards Kathleen
Lyrics for Song: Back to Me
Lyrics for Album: Back to Me

I've got ways to make you sorry
start my life with someone else
I've got ways to make you fall
I'll tell you all the things that I lied about
I've got ways to make you mad
Laughing at the girl sitting on your lap
I've got ways to make you sing my songs
Ones I ain't written yet

I've got lights you've never seen
I've got moves I've never used
I've got ways to make you come
back to me

I've got ways to make you strange
Drug you up and drag you home
I've got ways to track you down
In all of the places you like to go
I've got ways to make you crazy
wear all the things you always wanted me to
I've got ways to make you run
My daddy is coming for you

I've got lights you've never seen
I've got moves I've never used
I've got ways to make you come
back to me

I've got ways to make you hear me
just by whispering your name
I've got ways to make you think
you'll never be happy again
I've got ways to make you see
I'm so much better than before
I've got ways to make you swear
you won't want your old life anymore

I've got lights you've never seen
I've got moves I've never used
I've got ways to make you come
Back to me

Play it again.

I have many all time favorites for jutebox selections that I played while out for a night.

I had my space(d) period with Rocketman and Space Oddity - both of which I still really like. Eh, Major Tom.

Also the many hits of the Stones, Clapton, Doors, Pink Floyd, Allman Bros, Petty, Led Zep, G.Dead are more a blur than anything. They all supplied me with favorites for a time.

Now I prefer to hear more of the newer stuff out there: Death Cab, Wilco, F.Ferd, Keane, W Stripes...

But the winner (probably) of all time is:

Who do you count as your favorites?

That's entertainment.

I've run out of pictures to post, unlike someone else I know.
So until I get some new ones, I'm posting music from youtube.com.

I heard this at lunch while out doing errands; now It's stuck in my head.

The lyrics are, at the very least; edgy, somewhat ironic, dark and disconcerting.

Lyrics (so you can sing along) are below the video.

This is the accoustic version:

From WIKI:

Paul Weller allegedly wrote "That's Entertainment", a bitter slice-of-life piece reflecting on the struggle of the English working class, in around 15 minutes upon returning, under the influence, from the pub. Despite being only available as an import single, it peaked at #21 on the UK charts, an unprecedented feat. Although it lacks the "distinctive" Jam electric sound propelled by Rick Buckler's energetic drumming, it is now arguably The Jam's most noted song. Despite the group's lack of commercial success in America, the song even made American magazine Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT - Paul Weller
A police car and a screaming siren -
A pnuematic drill and ripped up concrete -
A baby waiting and stray dog howling -
The screech of brakes and lamplights blinking -
that's entertainment.

A smash of glass and the rumble of boots -
An electric train and a ripped up 'phone booth -
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat -
Lights going out and a kick in the balls -
that's entertainment.

Days of speed and slow time Mondays -
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday -
Watching the news and not eating your tea -
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls -
that's entertainment.

Waking up at 6 a.m. on a cool warm morning -
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol -
An amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard -
Watching the tele and thinking about your holidays -
that's entertainment.

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes -
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume -
A hot summers' day and sticky black tarmac -
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were faraway -
that's entertainment.

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight -
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude -
Getting a cab and travelling on buses -
Reading the grafitti about slashed seat affairs -
that's entertainment.

Keen, it's Keane.

Much too obvious play on words?

Yes.
Sorry.

I'll never be a headline writer.

I forgot I took this. Transferred from my camera to a poorly named folder.

I must rebuild my cloud pictures anyway since I lost the older posts.

Depressing: less than two weeks till Thanksgiving. Have a nice weekend.

Made in Canada.

Martha & the Muffins "Echo Beach". I heard this today on the radio and couldn't pass it up. I remember looking for an MP3 of it only a couple of months ago. (don't ask me why - it was probably stuck in my head)

I never realized that most songs are now available on youtube.com in one form or another. You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant. I mean youtube / internet.

Blogging seems to be replacing my bulletin board. I used to keep misc notes, pictures, columns from newspapers, magazines, ticket stubs, schedules, cartoons, etc. Anything interesting I'd run across during the course of a day.

The disadvantage is you can't empty / update it every year or so to save the best ones for remembrance / safe keeping (ie: shoebox). But then again, you couldn't tack a 20 year old video on the wall.

Number 9. Number 9.

WXRT radio - limited CD. Posted by Picasa

I just got it yesterday. Awesome mix of songs. Live versions. Not the ordinary run of the mill.

K.T., BRMC, My Morning Jacket, Buddy Guy, Gomez. They're all good.

http://93xrt.com/pages/102280.php (they are all listed here)

I also have number's 1, 3, 7, and 8.

1 is selling for 75.00 to 100.00 bucks on ebay when you can find it (has a great XTC medley on it) and the song the Replacements were playing they self destructed.

3's Neville Brothers is worth it alone. 10 minutes of fantastic melody. Also on it, Poi Dog Pondering's Complicated.

7 - Stereophonics and 8 - Bowie doing a country(like beginning) version of Scary Monsters. Sounds weird but it works.

I don't know why I didn't get them all. I have some holes to fill.

Leftover from spring.

My bench. Posted by Picasa

I was a little worried using "hello" to transfer the picture. I think that's what caused my last problem.

Anyway, this was taken this spring as I was getting used to the "new' camera. Not great but more color than if I took the same picture tonight. I was learning.

My neighbor made me a couple of benches for helping him on the computer. One is in the house elevating a cat bowl so Cubbie won't eat from it and the other is here.

I keep newly potted plants here until I can figure out how much shade they're going to need. In Illinois, it seems to vary month to month.

I guessed wrong with the yellow one. The sun overburned it by mid-summer (and it was supposed to be full sun).

It ended up making a nice ash tray / bottle cap holder in the back yard during horseshoes.
